Hey ladies, who is in charge of your financial future?

I have a quick question for you.  Who is in charge of your financial future?  Is your answer:

A) You

B) Your spouse or another loved one

c) You have no idea

I hope you picked A) You.  If you picked that answer, congratulations!  You are on track to becoming a wealthy and financially free woman because you know that you can control your financial destiny.  Make sure you are doing what is necessary to keep on track to achieving your financial goals.  When was the last time you opened a financial statement, rebalanced your investment portfolio, performed a budget check-up, or bought a new mutual fund?  If it has been more than 6 months since you've done any of these, it's time to set aside an hour to revisit your investments.  Or maybe you need to develop these skills and it is time you seek out financial advice.

If you picked B) Your spouse, then we need to talk.  What will you do if your spouse dies or you get divorced?  How do you know if he is doing a good job?  Why would you leave something as important as financial freedom to someone else?  Chances are you are a pretty intelligent person because you are seeking out financial information on sites like this one.  You can learn the basics of financial planning and should insist on taking an active role in managing your finances with whomever is doing it for you now.

If you picked C) You have no idea, it's time to get serious about your financial future.  Do you know how much you need to retire? Do you have financial goals?  What are you doing to achieve those goals?  Retirement and financial freedom won't happen on their own.  I can guarantee that you will not wake up at age 65, much less 55, 45, or 35 and be able to retire if you do not take a seriously proactive approach to managing your finances.  It's time to get off the couch of financial laziness and get moving!
